The doubles specialist reached the quarter finals at Wimbledon and the semis at the Australian Open. I already had the support of my family, my friends, my coaches… But there was a part of me that was a little worried.

Kasatkina made headlines in 2022 when she came out as a lesbian.
I hope to play in the US Open qualifiers this year and go to the Australian Open in 2026.
– At what age did you start playing tennis?
– At the age of four, very young. In October that year she ranked eight worldwide in women’s singles.
As the number one Russian player at the time, she switched to representing Australia this year when she gained citizenship, and ranks first there too.

How do you manage to keep traveling and playing?
– I have help from people who believe in me. She was outed when she was sued by her former partner Marilyn Barnett in 1981, making her the first openly gay female athlete of her celebrity. Your support is invaluable.

Where are the Gay Men in Tennis?
While many tour players may lend an encouraging word and the ATP has support programs, one thing neither can necessarily provide is an actively playing — or even actively on tour — mentor.

The only two openly gay men to compete in elite-level tennis were active before World War Two.
Gottfried von Cramm was a multiple grand slam winner, but was arrested for being gay in Nazi Germany. He was jailed for six months before marrying a heiress, facing down a ban from Wimbledon after the incident, being conscripted by the German Army and unwillingly fighting in World War II.
The second, Bill Tilden, an American, won 14 Major singles titles, including 10 Grand Slams,before he was arrested in November 1946 on Sunset Boulevard by the Beverly Hills police for having sex with an underage male.
Their relationship ended before Moore and Bektas’s began.

– You weren’t born when Kuerten won the 1997 Roland Garros…
– My mum always tells a story.

– No, no, not from them.
– Do you think that with that photo you uploaded in December, you can help other gay players feel more secure, more relaxed, more confident about uploading a photo like that themselves?
– If that happens it would be great.

And a lot of people I don’t know, but who told me they admired me.
