The already colorful industry is built upon thousands of LGBTIA+ people’s hard work and dedication to the craft.

These gay fashion designers are at the forefront of the fashion industry. Calvin Klein

Visionary Calvin Klein (seemingly) identifies as bisexual, as he once told Vanity Fair that he’s had relations with both men and women over the years.

Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent was once called the “Prince of Fashion.” Being young and incredibly talented, Saint Laurent injected new and fresh blood into the fashion scene. Ostier took Benita with him, and soon, Benita and Dior were seen hanging out with each other a lot more.

In fact, Dior wasn’t publicly seen with any of his boyfriends until his last one, Jacques Benita. Saint Laurent and Bergé sadly moved on to the afterlife, but their love and legacy remain. What was supposed to be a relaxing time for him turned into a tragedy when he suffered a heartache that he couldn’t recover from. He lived the rest of his life in comparative obscurity.

As a longtime footwear enthusiast, Louboutin opened a shoe parlor in 1992. Simon Porte Jacquemus is openly gay and even shared his wedding on social media. The 81-year-old is praised for constructing a whole wave of everything from underwear to accessories. Nothing is known about his personal life after his relationship with Dior.

Another thing that could have landed him in trouble was his sexual proclivity. The revolutionary designer was another icon who hailed from France. This was the first time that Dior was seen holding his romantic partner’s hand in public.

It is a common hangout point for Dior and his friends, due to which Jacques is also always around and, hence a part of the circle.

While it is now well-known that Dior was gay, back then, he couldn’t risk this secret coming out. People of different ethnicities, races, and sexuality thrive in the field.

If caught, Dior and his partner would have been persecuted for their sexual orientation, especially under the Nazi rule, which is why he was careful not to have these things become public. Creating amazing collections each season, while at the same time honoring the fashion house’s codes cements him as one of the best designers today.

Valentino Garavani

The founder of Maison Valentino, Valentino Garavani, is with his long-time life and business partner Giancarlo Giammetti.

After serving as The House of Dior’s head designer, he and his lover, Pierre Bergé, started the French-based empire, specializing in luxury, ready-to-wear apparel, footwear, and cosmetics. Nearly 20 years later, Tom Ford is a billion-dollar company and a leading unisex line of jackets, shoes, makeup, pajamas, and more. Benita died at the age of 91 in 2005.

LGBTQIA+ fashion designers deserve more credit for their contributions to style culture.

Coming from the traditional age of modest glamour, many gay makers unorthodoxly pushed the limits of high-end couture and made it their duty to set statements through clothing.

Considering the timeline, Jacques in ‘The New Look’ is most probably Jacques Homberg, a decade younger than Dior, but with whom Dior remained friends even after their romantic connection had run its course.

While Dior had quite a few relationships in his lifetime, the only affair that Dior finally felt confident enough to acknowledge in public was the one he had with Jacques Benita.
