So it wasn’t gay of him to think Alex was cute. He is bisexual and is in a relationship with Alec Lightwood during The Mortal Instruments and The Dark Artifices. It was as simple as that.

After the end of June, the joyous month of Pride, throughout which we have had to deal with the resurgence of transphobic tweets from a once much-loved children’s author, it is more important than ever to remember the examples of good representation that exist in children’s literature.
He could appreciate the aesthetic of them, but never before had he wanted to date one. But he never once felt the desire to do anything romantic with them, because he wasn’t attracted to guys. In the second version, the “Calamus” poems were added. In Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, the main character, Magnus Chase, is either bisexual or pansexual and his partner Alex Fierro is genderfluid.
Another well-known author with LGBTQ+ main characters is Cassandra Clare.
the Homo Sapiens Agenda which become the movie Love, Simon which is now becoming a tv show too. This was an incredibly powerful sentiment to see in a children’s book and a major advancement for queer representation in literature, as reflected by the book winning the Stonewall Book Award for children’s literature in 2017. In Trials of Apollo, Nico di Angel dates a boy named Will Solace.
As a son of Hades, the god of death, Nico is somewhat of an outsider from the first moment he is introduced.
Rather than half-apologetically hiding this character away in the background of his world, Riordan brings Alex into the centre of his plot by making her the love interest of the title hero, Magnus. He wasn’t blind, he could tell whether people were attractive or not. Clare also wrote The Bane Chronicles which is a compilation of stories about Magnus and his previous relationships.
Becky Albertalli has written a few books with LGBTQ+ main characters.
The Fantastic Beasts series of movies has no mention of that so far and supposedly will not have mention of it. She was cute on both her female days and male days. Magnus Bane is a constant in each series in Clare’s Shadowhunter Chronicles. Adam Silvera is a gay author who has written several books with gay main characters such as They Both Die At the End which takes place over one day.
And sometimes, those guys were pretty nice to look at for a moment or two longer than necessary.
However, in his Magnus Chase books, Riordan pulls out all the stops, with the introduction of Alex Fierro demonstrating real evolution in terms of his LGBT+ representation.
This series exists as proud proof that there is no excuse for not providing good, well researched and accessible LGBT+ representation in children’s books.

Riordan made a real effort to narrate Alex’s gender fluidity as authentically as possible, explaining to fans that he utilised his experience teaching transgender students, and the book Beyond Magenta containing interviews with transgender teens, in his writing.
Despite being glad to see the representation, the cruel depiction of being forcibly outed was painful for many fans, some of whom felt Riordan had handled the subject insensitively. These are not the only LGBTQ+ characters.
